Visual comfort of binocular and 3D displays
Imperfections in binocular image pairs can cause serious viewing discomfort. For example, in stereo vision systems eye strain is caused by unintentional mismatches between the left and right eye images (stereo imperfections). Head-mounted displays can induce eye strain due to optical misalignments. We have experimentally determined the level of (dis)comfort experienced by human observers viewin...
متن کاملEffects of chromatic and luminance contrast on reading.
Reading performance was measured for drifting text defined by chromatic contrast with various amounts of luminance contrast present. With 0.12 luminance contrast added, reading performance was unaffected by the presence of chromatic contrast over a range of character sizes varying 30-fold. When luminance contrast was reduced to near the threshold for reading, chromatic contrast sustained readin...
متن کاملPsychophysics of reading. XI. Comparing color contrast and luminance contrast.
Text can be depicted by luminance contrast (i.e., differences in luminance between characters and background) or by color contrast (i.e., differences in chromaticity). We used a psychophysical method to measure the reading speeds of eight normal and ten low-vision subjects for text displayed on a color monitor. Reading speed was measured as a function of luminance contrast, color contrast (deri...
متن کاملLuminance probes for contrast measurements in medical displays
We report on a comparative study that examines four conic luminance probes in their ability to measure small-spot display contrast. We performed linear scans of a slit using a computer-controlled stage. We found that, although the probes were assembled according to the same design, small differences in their performance due to minor variations in materials and surfaces can be measured.
متن کاملPerformance and comfort on near-eye computer displays.
BACKGROUND Very small high-resolution displays (SVGA, 800 x 600 pixels) worn near the eye and imaged to create a virtual image have potential as alternatives to traditional computer displays. METHODS Twenty-two subjects performed text-based tasks on five displays: monocular virtual, binocular head-mounted virtual, hard copy, flat panel, and a small format portable display. Outcome measures in...
